Brain Damage

Is no one else worried
about the brain, zippered thing
locked away until now
split open, scanned,
radiated, picked on,
apart, butterflied
by such indelicate hands?
Secrets sought
too many secrets.
Crack the shell
the walnut sits
a part of itself
apart from itself
where is the self
How does disease
contort, creative spark
To save the body
damn the body
aim at the meta-
meat, left-center
above the heart
slice a line
and hope to find
whatever it is
we’re hoping
to find: answers
to it all, cost
of it all.
